5/3, 4, 5 PDX FEST 2008 Workshops at NW Film Center. Peripheral Produce will join forces with the Northwest Film Center to present three filmmaker workshops during the festival taught by three visiting artists - Travis Wilkerson, Shana Moulton, and Craig Baldwin. 5/3 Reviving the Lost Art of Agitation with Ravis Wilkerson, 10 AM-1 PM, $35. This workshop will screen clips from and discuss the instructor's practice of "third cinema." Adopted by the filmmaker after a chance meeting with legendary film propagandist Santiago Alvarez, the third cinema approach weds politics to the non-fiction film form, suggesting that there is a utopian sphere where art and science collide, and where the imaginative capacities of the cinema can be put to meaningful use. 5/4 Do-It-Yourself Green Screen with Shana Moulton, 10 AM-1 PM, $35. The instructor will share her insights into the possibilities of this expressive tool, screening examples from Desiree Holman, Mike Smith, and her own work, explaining the mechanics of keying in layperson's terms. 5/5 Flix Remix: A Found Footage Workshop with Craig Baldwin, 6-9:30 PM, $45. Drawing on his own vast experience as a found footage guru, the instructor will discuss this genre's influence on alternative cinema, screening clips from his found footage classics, TRIBULATION 99 and SONIC OUTLAWS, and other works. Then, the creative and critical methods of working with archival film prints will be demonstrated through hands-on activities. All workshops will be offered at the Northwest Film Center's School of Film, 934 SW Salmon. Pre-registration is encouraged. 5/3, 4, 22, 25 Encaustic Workhops with Linda Womack, author of Embracing Encaustic: Learning to Paint with Beeswax. 5/3 Tons of Texture: In this fast paced class we'll use several techniques to create texture including adding fibers, using irons, brush techniques and of course tons of wax. This is an intermediate encaustic class. 1:00 - 5:00, $95. 5/4, Encaustic Painting Intensive: No experience is necessary for this all day quick start wax class. You will use techniques involving collage, painting, scraping, layering, incising and textured finishes using wax in an assortment of vivid colors. 10 am – 4 pm, $140. 5/22, Mixing Your Own Encaustic Paint & Medium: In this class you will mix a big batch of encaustic medium (beeswax and resin) and learn how to use that as a base to make encaustic paint. Each student will take home 3 tins of paint and one tin of clear encaustic medium. 6 – 9 pm, $50. 5/25 Encaustic Image Transfers: Transferring images and drawings onto wax is quick and easy, and gives a beautifully rustic effect. 5/7 Writing to Your Public: A workshop for artists with Jill Kelly. Learn how create excellent written materials for your portfolio: An effective press release, a useful resume, and an enlightening artist statement. Participants will be asked to submit rough drafts of their materials a week in advance. Workshop exercises and activities will be based on those materials. Jill Kelly, PhD, is an experienced professional editor and writer who coaches artists and writers in the creative process. Her memoir, Sober Truths: The Making of an Honest Woman. 6 pm to 8:30 pm. 5/10 Pronto Plate Lithography Workshop with Ken Walker. Introductory workshop on using Pronto Plates for lithography. Class will start by using a sharpie to draw on the pronto plate. Once image is on the plate the artist can go directly to the press. Use of the ball point pen, copier, laser printer and other advanced techniques will also be demonstrated. Pronto plates do not require the traditional techniques of lithography making it a less toxic printmaking technique. Quick imaging can make the plates very versatile. 5/15 Portland Art Museum Artmaking Program: Community Project in collaboration with Marie Watt. Join Museum educators and create wool blossoms to contribute to artist Marie Watt’s Contemporary Northwest Art Awards installation, which explores themes of storytelling, remembrance, and the indigenous ideology of seven generations. The first in a series of workshops designed to emphasize basic bookbinding skills, this workshop will focus on the “Sewn Board Binding.” In this style the cover boards are sewn as part of the text block employing a simple linking stitch, creating a beautiful, lie-flat binding. 6/13-15 Portland Photographers Forum presents: The Human Figure-Moving Beyond Stereotypes with Martha Casanave, who will approach the topic of the nude in photography from both a historical and a personal perspective. Vicki Halper, a guest curator at the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, WA, will present Contrasts: A Glass Primer, a lecture delineating the distinctions between craft and art in glass making. 7/7-11 & 7/21-25 The Figure in the Landscape with Joseph Mann (two sessions). In this workshop you will investigate different approaches to organizing paintings of the figure in the landscape. During the week, you will work to integrate the figure with an intimate garden space. With a focus on integrating movement technique and choreographic practice with performance quality and expression, this 4 week intensive offers the dance student of any level the opportunity to work closely with many of the region’s most provocative contemporary dance artists. 7/13-18 Oregon Teacher Arts Institute. Each summer, elementary teachers from across the state gather at the Oregon Teacher Arts Institute to immerse themselves in intensive professional development in music, theatre, dance and visual arts. This week-long residential workshop, which will be held at Portland State University in 2008, is managed by the Oregon Alliance for Arts Education, in collaboration with the Oregon Department of Education and the Oregon Arts Commission. Institute participants will be assigned two areas of focus in Music,Theatre/Creative Dramatics and Visual Arts, plus Dance/Creative Movement. A series of optional “studios” and interactive performances assures ample opportunities to experience all the arts disciplines. Assessment, Oregon Arts Content Standards, resources and research supporting the arts’ critical role in academic and social development will be covered. 7/14-18 Tears of Joy's Puppetry for Teachers Workshop taught by Emily Alexander. You will learn effective puppetry techniques for your classroom and learn how to integrate puppetry into your curriculum. You will build and experiment with different styles of puppets and learn skills in manipulation and dramatic expression. With over 18 years experience in her field, Emily will teach you how to turn stories into fun and exciting plays that will enhance your classroom! 9/19-21 Master Black & White Printing Class with John Wimberley. The Master Printing Class is open to all black and white film photographers who already possess basic printing skills, and who want to take their printing to a higher level. Because a fine print requires a fine negative, each photographer will have an opportunity for their negatives and prints to be critiqued by John Wimberley. Will examine all aspects of printing, from choice of paper and processing chemistry to optimum conditions for evaluating wet prints. Among the subjects to be presented will be techniques to arrive most quickly at the final print, thus saving time and materials, matching contrast and print exposure to the visualized image, dodging and burning effectively and invisibly, toning, processing and presentation for archival permanence.
