This two-hour, interactive workshop will focus on copyrights and contracts, providing practical information on various legal topics related to the protection and sales of artwork. 7/7-30 Audacious Dancing: Exploring the Dualities of Technique and Performance with Linda K. Johnson. Structured as eight discreet classes with a connected thread of ideas, this workshop is about exploring both the edges and the center of moving and performing movement. They will dance hard, hardly dance at all, ponder meaning, and perhaps peel back some layers of comfort in order to get to some new places. This class is structured for experienced, intermediate level movers interested in nuancing their approach dancing. 7/13-24 PNCA Summer Animated Arts Institute: Boundary Crossings~ An Institute in Animated Arts. This two-week innovative institute explores the emerging field of animated arts through a combination of theory and practice sessions, lectures and screenings. Boundary Crossings: An Institute in Animated Arts is open to practitioners working in the field, scholars, and upper division graduate students as an intensive immersion in interdisciplinary explorations designed to prompt critical and creative outcomes at the leading edge of contemporary animated arts and scholarship. 7/13 & 7/25 & 8/4 Stories and Songs for Compassionate Classroom. 7/13, 8/4 for Grade 2-6 Teachers. 7/25 for Pre-K thru 1st Grade Teachers. An energizing and joy-filled class will exploring how storytelling and songs can foster empowering, positive and compassionate classrooms. 7/13-26 JAW: A Playwright's Festival presented by Portland Center Stage. Technological mysteries mix with existential epiphany and a fair amount of anthropomorphic activity at the 2009 edition of Portland Center Stage’s JAW: A Playwright’s Festival. Featured plays in progress include Marc Acito’s dust up about gay penguin dads, Birds of a Feather; Pulitzer-prize nominee Will Eno’s Middletown; Jordan Harrison’s typography obsessed mystery Futura; 36 Views author Naomi Iizuka’s Berkley-Rep-bound 遠西奇器述 (Translation: Concerning Strange Devices from the Distant West); Yale student Kim Rosenstock’s Michelangelo inspired romance of the bizarre, 99 Ways to F**k a Swan; and Seattle-based playwright Stephanie Timm’s On the Nature of Dust. The Festival will open with the Made in Oregon series, featuring pieces from Brian Kettler, Sue Mach, Andrea Stolowitz and Nick Zagone, with performances at 6pm 7/13-16 on the Main Stage, Gerding Theater at the Armory, 128 NW Eleventh Avenue. 7/13-8/4 Artistic Summer Training at Portland Taiko. Come play taiko in an intensive immersion program, taught by the core performers of Portland Taiko. The program is set up in an intimate environment with a limited number of participants. The Artistic Summer Training Institute includes taiko form, rhythm, movement basics and the chance to build on your taiko skills—challenging and moving you from right where you are, with attention where you most need a boost. 7/14-15 Fundraising Summit in Seattle presented by The Center for Nonprofit Success. The Summit includes seminars on foundation, corporate and individual giving. This year's Summit also offers one-on-one mentoring sessions with the speakers so that attendees can ensure that their specific questions are answered. 7/18-8/1 Illness as a Metaphor for Creativity Workshop with Lisa Parsons at The 100th Monkey Studio on memoir, writing, and mixed media artwork. All materials will be provided by the studio, but students can bring photos to add to their mixed media artworks if desired. The course will be held on three successive Saturday afternoons from noon to 2pm, July 18, July 25, and August 1. The cost is $15 per class, but it is suggested that participants sign up for all three weeks, since the material builds upon itself. 7/23 Panel Discussion: Oregon College of Art and Craft Artists in Residence. This summer, OCAC hosts three guest and two faculty artists in residence for a six week period. The residents will use this period to share ideas and inspiration while working in our studios on their proposed body of work. Artists in residence are Karl Burkheimer, Tracey Cockrell, Ann Marie Kennedy, Julie McNiel and Michelle Ross. The OCAC Artist-in-Residence Program brings both emerging and nationally known artists to the College, providing them with time, resources and equipment to push their work in new directions while interacting with students, faculty and the greater Portland art community. This discussion is presented collaboratively by OCAC and Museum of Contemporary Craft. 7/23-25 Teaching the Basics through Design, Architecture Foundation of Oregon's popular workshop for high school teachers. Teachers explore how architecture and construction industries design and create buildings with the basic principles of math, science, art and communication. They participate in hands-on exploration and interdiscplinary training. The 3-day workshop provides new ideas and concepts from the design process for classroom application. It is open to high school teachers throughout Oregon and Washington. Space is limited. Lunch and materials are provided, including a copy of the 640-page teacher edition textbook plus cd rom, The Architecture Handbook: A Teacher Guide to Understanding Buildings developed and published by the Chicago Architecture Foundation in 2007. 7/25 Meet the Artists of PNCA: Paul Missal will create a still-life painting. Missal has taught painting, drawing and design at PNCA since 1972 and is currently a professor emeritus. He maintains an active studio practice, exhibiting work throughout the Northwest. This lecture is part of a series of Meet the Artists of PNCA, in conjunction with the PNCA at 100 exhibition (6/6-9/13). 2-4pm, Portland Art Museum, Whitsell Auditorium, 1219 SW Park, Portland, www.pam.org.
7/27-8/7 Figure in the Landscape painting workshops with Joseph Mann.They will synthesize a blending of the figure with the landscape and a blending of what you see with what you know. Instead of trying to mimic nature you will work toward what Cezanne called “a parallel to nature”. Will investigate: the difference between dark and light painting (early van Gogh) and color painting (late Van Gogh); what the French modernist painters learned from the Japanese; composition from observation which becomes a dynamic analogue to what we see. This is a rigorous course designed to push painters towards a deeper level of understanding regarding their craft and a higher level of artistic potentiality. Workshop A: 7/27-31; Workshop B: 8/3-7. 8/2-8, 8/9-15 Arts At Menucha 2009 sponsored by Creative Arts Community. Held at Menucha, overlooking the Columbia River Gorge, these one week residential workshops feature outstanding instructors and small classes in a nurturing community atmosphere. 30 Minutes from Portland, the historic 96 acre Meier estate includes walking trails, gardens, tennis courts and outdoor swimming pool. These classes provide instruction and techniques for integrating a variety of art forms into the classroom for anyone from the total novice to the seasoned professional. 8/7-8 Sitka Workshop: Printmaking Without A Press with Barbara Mason. Geared especially for classroom teachers, this workshop will also be of interest to artists. Different types of printmaking using different inks and papers will be explored. The class is comprehensive, exploring relief, mono-type, stamping, found object printing, and simple screen-printing. This class uses materials that are nontoxic and water soluable. Barbara is a full time artist with a non-toxic studio. She is education chair of Print Arts Northwest and one of the founders of Atelier Meridian. 8/8 Meet the Artists of PNCA: George Johanson will capture the essence of jazz duo Panorama in a portrait of the musicians as the play. Johanson taught at PNCA and served as head of the printmaking department until his retirement. Panorama features bass player Fred Hard and Jason Okamoto on guitar. 8/15 The 16th Annual Northwest Oboe Seminar. Designed for intermediate through advanced oboists, this annual Seminar is devoted to all aspects of oboe performance with a different emphasis each year. This year’s emphasis will be “Focus on Bach” with guest, oboist Allan Vogel.The schedule also includes a solo master class, ensemble playing, dinner and an evening concert featuring all Seminar participants. The Seminar will be held Saturday, at All Saints’ Episcopal Church, Portland. The participant fee for this one-day seminar is $100 and includes T-shirt, minor instrument repairs, dinner and accompanist. Auditors pay $50 (may be paid at the door) and can observe Mr. Vogel’s focus session and will receive a concert ticket. 8/27-9/9 Ceramics and Photography Workshop in Skopelos, Greece. Using photography and Greek history as inspirations, participants in this 2-week workshop will learn new techniques with embedded colored clays from Meredith Dalglish, MFA and photographic imagery on clay from Dotti Cichon in a studio overlooking the Aegean. $1800 for each student includes ceramics instruction and materials, optional photography workshops, slide shows, all breakfasts, some dinners, an exhibition of student work at the gallery at The Skopelos Foundation for the Arts and a complimentary copy of the color catalog of the exhibition after returning to the US. 10/2-4 Write on the Sound: Writers' Conference. Write on the Sound, a regional favorite, is a 2 1/2-day writing conference presented by the City of Edmonds (WA) Arts Commission. This well-established conference, focuses on the craft of writing, offers an affordable experience for writers of all levels, with a variety of intimate high quality workshops at the Frances Anderson Center in Edmonds (700 Main Street). Pre-conference critique sessions and in-depth workshops are offered on Friday. The weekend conference continues with Saturday and Sunday workshops, a keynote address, and manuscript critique appointments. Saturday evening the Edmonds Arts Commission hosts a meet-and-greet reception including a book signing event. 10/10 OCAC Workshop: Deconstructing the Creative Process. Through a mix of lecture, individual exercises and group activities, this workshop will explore exactly what occurs during the creative process. By understanding the "mechanics" of creativity, students wull learn the cognitive tools necessary to master the challenges associated with each of the seven stages. 10/24 2009 All Oregon Calligraphers Conference. Capital Calligraphers, a guild based in the mid-valley, is hosting the 28th Annual All Oregon Calligraphers Conference (AOCC) at Western Oregon University’s Werner Center in Monmouth, OR.
