Artists Spotlight: Zen Parry

Zen Parry, sculptor, performer, and writer
Recipient of RACC 2006 Project Grant; RACC Portland Building Temporary Installation

Zen Parry  is a spiritual and artistic nomad who travels the globe and draws from the meaningful well of a truly diverse background―she has served in the Australian military, worked as a cartographer and corporate consultant, been an artist-in-residence and is studying for ordination as a Buddhist Priest. "I change between countries like most people change between bus lines. All to follow the art...wouldn't change a thing!"

Engagement: White Light, at Contemporary Crafts Museum & Gallery through March 11, 2007, is Zen Parry’s first major US exhibition. This mixed-media installation incorporates traditional craft media and techniques―clay, fiber, glass, metal and knitting, crocheting, origami―as well as coroner’s plastic, plastic toys, sound and light into an environment where the viewer and their movement through space is an integral component of the work. The impetus of Parry’s installation stems from her observation that American culture seems to dispose of meaning in pursuit of convenience, particularly in terms of its society’s relationship with death. The conceptual questions explored in this installation are rooted in the cross-cultural exploration of death, especially the enigmatic notion of “moving into the light” that is largely avoided in Western culture, yet is fundamental to the expression of several religions and cultures.
