Artists Spotlight: Adam Kuby

Adam Kuby, public artist
2006 RACC Public Art Commission a skateable entry walk to Portland's Pier Park Skatepark, Wavewalk.

Common to all of Adam Kuby's work is a desire to animate and transform landscapes and elements of the built environment, an interest that grows out of his training in landscape architecture as well as sculpture.

Pier Park Skatepark, Wavewalk

Working with RACC on the Pier Park Skate Park Project he had the opportunity to do just that. He collaborated with the Portland Park & Recreation's landscape architects and Skaters for Portland Skateparks to create a serpentine entry path that can be skated as well as walked. It's great fun to go out and watch people playing with and on the artwork and it is now one of the most well-used pieces of public art in Portland.

In addition, some of Adam's work explores how our built world can better coexist with the natural, and how architecture, infrastructure and existing man-made environments can be transformed to be more ecologically responsive. With these kinds of projects he strives to create multiple layers of meaning and purpose on a site and harness the symbolic power of art to create positive environmental change. These projects don’t require pristine settings, but instead thrive on the interactions between human and natural forces. They are usually multidisciplinary in nature and not only lend themselves to collaboration, but demand it.

The Acupuncture Project by Adam Kuby

In March 2008 Adam will be the Artist-in-Residence in Portland’s new South Waterfront neighborhood at the base of the aerial tram. He will present The Acupuncture Project/ Treatment for Portland-Giving the City an Acupuncture Treatment. He plans to bring together a group comprised of acupuncturists, city planners, art professionals, people from the city’s Asian communities, poets, writers, etc. Together they will re-envision Portland as a metaphorical body, map its meridians and diagnose its health. As a group they will explore how energy flows through the city and what parts of the metropolitan area might correspond to what bodily systems. RACC was an advisor on this public art program.
