Kirby Jones is a multi-disciplinary artist, simultaneously designing and making studio art furniture and also working on a unique method of generating large format photographs. He moved to Portland in 2004 when he was invited to be artist in residence at the Oregon College of Art & Craft (OCAC).
After the residency he spent time designing exhibits for the Portland Children’s Museum, teaching furniture classes at OCAC, and designing a line of furniture and developing a new education program for The ReBuilding Center. Both his art furniture and his prints ask the viewer/user to reflect upon and investigate the world around us – the hope being that if we look at the world from a different perspective we will find new mysteries in that which is often taken for granted.
Kirby will be showing his prints in an exhibit titled Life, Forms at Pushdot Studio from April 4 – 28, 2007 with an opening reception on April 5th. It is a pictorial inventory of natural specimens collected from around the Portland area that has evolved from its documentary origins about cataloging objects to also collecting aesthetics. The objects collected are typically no larger than a quarter but utilizing a high resolution scanner and a lambda printer they are presented in fine detail as large as 33” x 52”. This exhibit was funded in part by a RACC Project Grant.
“It is easy to look at life from a macro-perspective, to marvel at the mountain peaks that surround us; but there is an equal amount of grace and splendor when one adjusts their focal point, picks up a small stone and examines its myriad of colors and textures,” expresses Jones.
Kirby is showing his functional furniture designs (at right) from September 6 – 30, 2007 at Albina Community Bank, Pearl Branch Location, 430 NW 10th Avenue, Portland.
