Ethan Rose, musician and composer
Recipient of 2006, 2008 Project Grants

Born and raised in Illinois, Ethan Rose moved to Portland, Oregon in 1996 to study Electronic Music at Lewis and Clark College.Over the past ten years he has released new recordings, performed his music internationally, scored films (most recently, Gus Van Sant's Paranoid Park), created sound installations, and worked with a variety of collaborators. He continues to reside and work in Portland because he likes it here.

Ethan's work reflects his interests in old technologies, new sounds, and the restless exploration of musical form. His music, though electronic in nature, maintains an organic quality due to his almost exclusive use of acoustic sound sources. Much of his work has centered around a fascination with instruments from years long past, including things like music boxes, player pianos, and carillons. Although, he is more interested in pulling new sounds and ideas out of these old and varied devices rather than treating them with a sense of preservation. Drawing from his interests in musique concrete, chance operations and american minimalism, Ethan creates shifting sound environments that transport the close listener to a warm and unusual place.

Ethan Rose, Player Piano

In March 2008 Ethan will bring a sound installation, Player Piano, out of his studio and into Tilt Gallery and Project Space with the help of the RACC Project Grant. The installation will feature a 1920s player piano which will pneumatically play a selection of notes off of a paper roll. The tones of the piano, the spinning paper, and the player mechanism will all be amplified and effected before being rebroadcast through speakers into the same room. The resulting sounds will engulf the spectator in a collage of acoustical noise that bridges the gap between early recorded music and modern recording technologies.

On March 6th, Player Piano will open at Tilt Gallery and Project Space. The installation will be open that evening for a reception from 6-9, and will then be open Thursdays and Saturdays in March from 12-5 and by appointment. Tilt is located at 625 NW Everett St. #106, Portland, OR 97209.
