6/16-7/11 RACC presents Parking Space by Marylhurst University art student Susan Schnell in the Portland Building Installation Space. Susan Schnell will transform the Installation Space into a parking space filled with handmade bicycle forms and bicycle racks. The Portland Building, located at 1120 SW 5th Avenue, is open to the public from 7am - 6pm, Monday through Friday.
6/2/08 OPB Streaming Public Art. Public art in Oregon is the focus of two new OPB broadcasts that are now available online. Oregon Art Beat focused on one topic throughout the half-hour episode entitled Everybody’s Art (aired 5/22/08) an exploration of public art around the state. As a companion piece, Think Out Loud (broadcast 5/23/08) on OPB radio expanded on some of issues surrounding public art, featuring guests Nanda D’Agostino, sculptor and creator of many public artworks; Charlie Kraft, muralist; Tracy Reeve, City Attorney with a specialty in mural issues; and Shelley Curtiss, bronze artist and former Mayor of Joseph, OR. Also go on-line to see an ever-growing map of public art throughout the state of Oregon.
5/2-6/28 The Portland Mural Show. Featuring the work of local Portland muralists over the past 20 years. This show is a snapshot of extant mural work around Portland and a showcase for new work by local muralists. April-October 2008 HANDMADE BICYCLE EXHIBIT AT PDX: More than three million airline passengers are expected to see the showcase of frames designed and built in Oregon. Ten custom bicycles will be on display at Portland International Airport’s artOBJECTS showcase in Concourse E (beyond security). The bikes, all created by Oregon builders, demonstrate a combination of engineering skills, precision metal craftsmanship, cutting edge design, and a passion for cycling shared by the represented bike builders. The ten examples on display represent only a few of the builders working in Oregon, but they share the common goal of providing a one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted machine that is both a unique ride and a functional work of art.
Oregon Percent for Art Digital Collection. This is a free, online collection of images and documents representing thousands of artworks provided for under the Oregon Percent for Art statue. Covering a 30-year period, the database offers access to over 5,200 items. Over 647 individual artists are represented, encompassing 184 individual building projects throughout Oregon. The collection offers glimpses of 1,545 unique artwork creations, visual narratives of the creative process, and documentation that speaks to the inspiration and beliefs that empower each creation. You may search by artist name, artwork medium, building site where the art is located. The collection creation is representative of a collaboration between the Oregon Arts Commission and the University of Oregon Libraries.
2/1/08 RACC Launches Visual Chronicle of Portland Webpage. A new link on RACC’s website will take visitors to the Visual Chronicle of Portland, a city-owned collection of works on paper that focuses on artists’ views of the city’s social and urban landscapes. The intent of the collection is to reveal Portland’s distinctive personalities as seen and interpreted by artists in the region. It is both an eclectic view of life in Portland as well as a record of artists working in the city. Along with images of the artwork, the page contains the collection’s history, selection process, current selection committee members, and provides details on each artwork including current locations. RACC has been acquiring artwork for the collection since 1985. Currently there are 250 artworks in the collection, representing 149 artists.
May, 2007. New Edition of Public Art Walking Tour Brochure Available (pdf) Made possible through a partnership with the Portland Oregon Visitors Association (POVA), the brochure provides a walking tour map and listing of locations of nearly 100 publicly accessible artworks from the Lloyd District to the University District and parts in-between. Featured on the cover is Harrell Fletcher’s, Everyday Sunshine, an interactive public art installation at 15 locations along the Streetcar line – illuminating nearby objects, hidden details of your environment. Brochures are available at Pioneer Courthouse Square, Pioneer Place, the Public Art Gallery in the Portland Building, the Oregon Convention Center, Central Library and at RACC, or can be downloaded at link above.
Public Art Fabricator List. Following RACC's Artist Workshop of Making Art/Work for a Public Space: the Ins and OUts of PUblic Art Fabrication on March 17th, artists were given a list of local fabricators, which can downloaded at Fabricators July 2007 (pdf)..
RACC’s Celebrating 25 Years of Percent for Art: 1980-2005. In
2005, the City of Portland and Multnomah County mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of their respective Percent for Art ordinances. Administered by the Regional Arts & Culture Council (RACC), the public art program is committed to weaving public art throughout communities that reflects a diversity of populations, artistic disciplines, and points of view. Results range from permanent site specific and integrated projects designed and fabricated for longevity and durability to temporary installations or performances lasting just a few hours or eventually disintegrating over time.
