Art at PDX

The Regional Arts & Culture Council coordinates a rotating exhibition at Portland International Airport.

The artOBJECTS exhibition, located behind security at the entrance to Concourse E, showcases small scale three-dimensional artwork and also features exhibitions curated by non-profit visual arts organizations in Oregon and Southwest Washington. The program’s goal is to showcase the region’s burgeoning art scenes and to stimulate visitors and residents to explore Oregon’s dynamic and evolving visual arts venues. This exhibition program is also administered by RACC’s Public Art Program.

Currently Showing:

August 2008- December 2009 Portland Grid Project Exhibit.

Portland Grid Project, is currently on display at the “Where We Live” exhibit in Concourse A at Portland International Airport. The nearly 100 photos by 14 photographers will be up through June 2009. This photographic essay of the Portland area was started by local photographer, Christopher Rauschenberg, in October of 1995. At that time, Mr. Rauschenberg took a pair of scissors to a standard AAA map of Portland and cut it into 98 pieces (grids) and then recruited 11 of the city’s most talented photographers to take pictures of one randomly picked square (grid) each month, using a variety of films and formats. It took nine years for the group (which grew to 15 photographers) to finish taking pictures in all 98 grid sections of the city. The Portland Grid photos on display in Concourse A right now represent only a fraction of the more than 20,000 photos taken from October 1995-July 2004.

Since that time, 19 photographers having continued the Portland Grid tradition by repeating the efforts of those who have gone before them. Each month, the photographers select a grid from a Portland map and do their best to capture more recent photos that tell Portland’s story. Month by month, over the next few years, they will revisit the same 98 grids photographed before, with the goal of capturing even more unique moments in the lives and landscapes of this great city.

Photographers represented in the exhibit are: Blake Andrews, Nancy Butler, Tom Champion (Round 1 Grid), Lisa Gidley, Carole Glauber, Bruce Hall, George Kelly, Ann Kendellen, Alexis Pike, David Potter, Christopher Rauschenberg, Shawn Records, Faulkner Short, William Washburn,

Concourse A is beyond security and are accessible to ticketed passengers only.
