The Last Room at the Portland Building February 4-29, 2008
The Regional Arts & Culture Council presents the installation, The Last Room, by Portland artist Becca Bernstein in the Portland Building Installation Space, February 4-29, 2008. The Portland Building, located at 1120 SW 5 th Avenue, is open to the public from 7am - 6pm, Monday through Friday.
For this installation, Bernstein will create a furnished apartment of a fictional resident in a long-term care facility complete with all the details that lend themselves to daily life and celebrations. Her intent is to create an intimacy between the subject and viewer that is deep enough to perhaps light a spark of recognition and empathy.
Bernstein’s art typically addresses issues of community and the “awkward dance of human interdependence.” Her nine years of working closely with residents of senior care homes in Oregon and Scotland has led her to explore relationships, developed or abandoned, in this contemporary age.
Background
Becca Bernstein is a 2008 recipient of the George Sugarman Foundation Grant for socially conscious artists. Her newest painting series, “Keyhole Miniatures,” is on view at Gottlieb Gallery, 220 SW Yamhill St, February 2 nd – 29th. “The Last Room” is made possible with additional help from Providence Elderplace. She earned a B.A. in art from Lewis and Clark College in 2000 where she majored in Studio Art/Drawing. Her work can be found in the public collections of the City or Lake Oswego, the Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center, the Northwest Business for Culture and the Arts, and the Oregon Ballet Theater.
