Plus Minus, a temporary installation at the Portland Building
April 7-May 2, 2008

Damien Gilley, Study for Plus Minus

The Regional Arts & Culture Council presents the installation, Plus Minus, by Portland artist Damien Gilley in the Portland Building Installation Space, April 7-May 2, 2008. The Portland Building, located at 1120 SW 5th Avenue, is open to the public from 7am - 6pm, Monday through Friday. This is the first of a series of three student installations over the next four months.

Gilley has been developing ideas of the phenomenology of perception in the environment and deconstructs the visual environment by reducing it to shapes, line and color. For this installation, Gilley will use black string and ink to create an abstract perspective drawing made of multiple viewpoints that overlap and interact with each other, ultimately creating a compelling force of perspective that focuses the viewer’s gaze. The drawing will be based on about fifteen source photographs of the sidewalks surrounding the Portland Building. Some linear elements will extend into the space, allowing the viewer to fully experience the installation by actually walking into the drawing. The final drawing will echo the immediate surrounding of the Portland Building, including shapes and objects familiar building users.
