Pattern: Exploration & Meaning of the Details
at the Portland Building
May 16-June 6, 2008

The Regional Arts & Culture Council presents the installation, Pattern: Exploration & Meaning of the Details, by Portland artist Jessie Smith in the Portland Building Installation Space, May 16-June 6, 2008. The Portland Building, located at 1120 SW 5th Avenue, is open to the public from 7am - 6pm, Monday through Friday. This is the second of a series of three student installations.

A twin bed, complete with pillows and bed linens, will inhabit the space. Shapes derived from the bed covering will extend onto the floor, wall and ceiling. Smith’s paper and mixed media installation will fill the space with two-dimensional elements spreading along the floor, streaming across the wall and suspended from the ceiling. Using patterns and designs found in our everyday lives, the artist’s intent is to create an intimate space that communicates a sense of wonder about everyday objects.

Background
Jessie Smith is currently an undergraduate student in painting and drawing at Portland State University. She most recently participated in creating a series of murals for the Cheerful Tortoise Bar and Restaurant in Portland.

Upcoming installations: Susan Schnell, June 16-July 11 (Marylhurst University BFA student); Cara Tomlinson, Sean Regan, Rachel Hibbard, July 28 – August 22; Paul Rebsom, September 1 – 26; Dan Senn, October 6 – 31; Gabe Shaughnessy, November 10 – December 5; all the art that fits (employee art exhibit), December 10 – January 9, 2009; Carolyn Matsumoto, January 19 – February 13; Robert McConaughy, February 23 – March 20. For more information, contact RACC at 503.823.5111.

A website that features images, proposals and statements of all installations featured in the space since 1994 can be found at www.racc.org/installationspace.

Through vision, leadership and service the Regional Arts & Culture Council works to integrate arts and culture in all aspects of community life.
