The Visual Chronicle of Portland is a city-owned collection of works on paper – prints, photographs, paintings and drawings – that represents artists’ views of Portland’s social and urban landscapes. The intent of the collection is to capture the spirit of Portland as it evolves and changes. It is both an eclectic view of life in Portland as well as a record of artists working in the city. Overall the collection currently includes 256 works by 146 artists. A small selection committee purchases artwork with a modest annual budget; current selection committee members are: Michael Brophy, Tiffany Lee Brown, Sally Cleveland, Paul Fujita, Jim Lommasson, Prudence Roberts, and Isaka Shamsud-Din.

Thirteen works are currently on view until August 13th in the lobby of the Antoinette Hatfield Hall, 1111 SW Broadway. Artists included in the exhibit are Michael Brophy, Jana DeMartini, Manuel Izquierdo, George Johanson, Andrew Larkin, Mike Lindenmeyer, Jim Lommasson, Henk Pander, Jacob and Arnold Pander, Joe Sacco, Jesus Lopez Vega and Sherrie Wolf.

The Visual Chronicle of Portland: Volume One (1985-1990), a book featuring color photographs of the first five years of purchases, is available at your local library or at RACC, 108 NW 9th, Suite 300, Portland, OR 97209. For more information on the collection, contact the Regional Arts & Culture Council at 503.823.5111 or go to www.racc.org.

Through vision, leadership and service the Regional Arts & Culture Council works to integrate arts and culture in all aspects of community life.
