Take one, Leave one at the Portland Building
March 26 – April 20, 2007
The Regional Arts & Culture Council presents the installation, Take one, Leave one, by Oregon State University student Rachel Warkentin in the Portland Building Installation Space, March 26-April 20, 2007. The Portland Building, located at 1120 SW 5th Avenue, is open to the public from 7am - 6pm, Monday through Friday.
Take One, Leave One combines the roles of the artist and the viewer by providing a space filled with hundreds of 4”x4” works of art that can be removed and replaced. In order to take home a piece of art, visitors must first create and display a new piece on site, from provided materials, and in doing so take on partial authorship of the installation. By taking part, visitors enter the installation as art collectors, decide on the piece they want, and leave as artists who create, exhibit, and ultimately allow their work to be claimed by someone else. As more people contribute, the installation changes, as works are claimed and replaced.
The original pieces are the artist’s documentation of the world as she sees and experiences it, noting things that are “important, interesting or troubling” to her. The installation investigates the ways that people from different backgrounds and different professions leave record of their passage. At the end of the month, the artist will save what remains of the installation and exhibit the artworks in another city, without creating any new squares. Eventually, she sees her role in this project as becoming that of facilitator.
Background
Rachel Warkentin is a senior at Oregon State University with a concentration in painting. She had her first solo show in spring 2006, and shortly afterward was awarded a full tuition Plinkiewisch Art Scholarship. She received an OSU Undergraduate Research, Innovation, Scholarship, and Creativity Grant in July 2006, funding her study of paint making and traditional egg tempera painting. In November 2006 she studied egg tempera painting with Ophrah Shemesh at a workshop in New York City. She is in her second term as a teaching assistant for beginning painting, and also assists the Visiting Artists program at OSU.
Sponsored by the Regional Arts & Culture Council since 1994, the Installation Art Series at the Portland Building invites the general public to re-examine its expectations and definitions of art, encourage dialogue about the role of art in public spaces, and provide artists with alternative exhibition space for their work. Upcoming installations will feature three students currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate programs in Oregon schools: April 30-May 25, Kamaya Lindquist (Portland State University); and June 4-29, Ely Kahn (Lewis and Clark College).
Through vision, leadership and service the Regional Arts
& Culture Council works to integrate arts and culture in all aspects of
community life.
