Notes on a Paper Bag at the Portland Building
September 10 – October 5, 2007

The Regional Arts & Culture Council presents the installation, Notes on a Paper Bag, by Portland artist Tore Djupedal in the Portland Building Installation Space, September 10 – October 5, 2007. The Portland Building, located at 1120 SW 5th Avenue, is open to the public from 7am - 6pm, Monday through Friday.

Djupedal is constructing a site specific sculpture using Kraft paper grocery bags, recycled from previous installations and donated from New Seasons Market. The bags transform into the artist’s building blocks with which he explores the material’s structural integrity versus its apparent weakness, creating arrangements that mimic aspects of architectural space. Key components of the installation are the reflective qualities of paint and light, and the shape and construction of the grocery bags. The paint is being donated by Imperial Paint Company.

Djupedal began using grocery bags after countless trips to the store resulted in stacks of neatly folded bags that lured him to take them apart, glue them together, draw on them, and then ultimately to create installations and wall pieces.

Background
Born in Norway, Tore Djupedal’s family moved to the United States when he was four. Since receiving his BFA from Ohio State University, he has exhibited his work across the country, from New York City to Los Angeles to Santa Fe to Chicago. In July 2007 his work was featured in the Blackfish Gallery Window Project and in October 2007 he is the featured artist in the PDX Contemporary Art Window Project. He maintains a small gallery space at 20 NW 5th, #405 which is open Thursdays and Saturdays, 2-6PM, by appointment, as well as every First Thursday, 6:30-10PM.

Upcoming installations: Noah Nakell, October 15-November 9; Gary Wiseman and T. Reginald Bluebell, November 19-December 14; all the art that fits (City/County employee art exhibit), December 21-January 25, 2008; Becca Bernstein, February 4-29; and Marie Watt, March 10-April 4, 2008.

Through vision, leadership and service the Regional Arts & Culture Council works to integrate arts and culture in all aspects of community life.
