Lightship at the Portland Building
October 15 – November 9, 2007

The Regional Arts & Culture Council presents the installation, Lightship, by Portland artist Noah Nakell in the Portland Building Installation Space, October 15-November 9, 2007. The Portland Building, located at 1120 SW 5th Avenue, is open to the public from 7am - 6pm, Monday through Friday.

When a visitor approaches the space, they see a full scale window frame in the middle of a wall with a window shade closed to about 6 inches above the sill. Peering through this space, the viewer sees a night scene at sea with what appear to be large ocean swells and, across the water, a house lit by moonlight, afloat on the waves. The interior of the house is lit, and inside viewers will see a simple domestic scene.

Nakell’s intention is for the installation to speak to the idea that, in western society, we insulate ourselves from the natural world as well as from social interactions in the human world. Increasingly, we find ourselves trading in real world experiences and interactions for a world made up of laptop and cell phone screens.

Background
Born in Presque Isle, Maine, Noah Nakell received his BFA from Cornish College of Art and currently lives and works in Portland. His work has been featured in group exhibitions at the Portland Art Center, Western Oregon University, Cornish College of Art, Tilt Gallery (Portland), and several venues on the World Wide Web (nonverbal.com and firefly.com). He is represented by the Beppu Wiarda Gallery in Portland.

Upcoming installations: Gary Wiseman and T. Reginald Bluebell, November 19-December 14; all the art that fits (City/County employee art exhibit), December 21-January 25, 2008; Becca Bernstein, February 4-29; and Marie Watt, March 10-April 4, 2008.

Through vision, leadership and service the Regional Arts & Culture Council works to integrate arts and culture in all aspects of community life.
