Artists invited to submit proposals for
Installation Space in the Portland Building
The Regional Arts & Culture Council invites artist/teams living in Oregon or Washington to submit proposals for temporary installations in a designated space located in the lobby of the Portland Building at 1120 SW 5th Avenue. Up to five professional artists/teams will be selected for one-month installations between July 2007 and June 2008. Artists selected will receive a $750 honorarium. The deadline for submissions is Monday, March 26, 2007. To obtain a copy of the Request for Proposals from RACC’s website, go to www.racc.org or call 503-823-5111.
Since the Portland Building's Installation Space program began in 1994, over 80 installations by regional artists have been featured in the small space designated for temporary art installations. The 15-story Portland Building, located at 1120 SW 5th Avenue in downtown Portland, is a hub of City and County government activities. The building was designed by the noted architect, Michael Graves, and is a popular destination for tourists and school groups throughout the year. Thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds pass through the building's lobby on a daily basis, making this space a prime location for artists to make public statements. The building is open to the public from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and staffed by security around the clock, seven days a week.
Sponsored by the Regional Arts & Culture Council since 1994, the Installation Art Series at the Portland Building provides the general public with the opportunity to experience challenging, diverse, and often interactive artwork, encourages dialogue about the role of art in public spaces, and provides artists with an alternative space to show their work. The site is a unique public forum through which art can be debated, discussed and contemplated.
Upcoming installations will feature three students currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate programs in Oregon schools: March 26-April 30, Rachel Warkentin (Oregon State University); April 30-May 25, Kamaya Lindquist (Portland State University); and June 4-29, Ely Kahn (Lewis and Clark College).
Through vision, leadership and service the Regional Arts
& Culture Council works to integrate arts and culture in all aspects of
community life.
