Hollow at the Portland Building
April 30-May 25, 2007
The Regional Arts & Culture Council presents the installation, Hollow, by Portland State University graduate student Kamaya Lindquist in the Portland Building Installation Space, April 30-May 25, 2007. The Portland Building, located at 1120 SW 5th Avenue, is open to the public from 7am - 6pm, Monday through Friday.
Using clear tape and plastic wrap, Lindquist will create familiar pieces found in a forest. The resulting hollow forms will produce glittering, translucent silhouettes and shadows of Douglas Firs, ferns and birds that are manifestations of our idea of a forest -- a “fantasy nature”.
When reviewing the history of the Portland Building, she was most interested in comments regarding the lack of natural light. The dilemma of finding it necessary to spend much of one’s day indoors while yearning for connection to the outside world was familiar. With this installation, Lindquist is creating a connection between an indoor and highly constructed environment and an outdoor “wild” one, with the result being a complete mini-environment out of plastic and light.
Background
Kamaya Lindquist is an M.F.A. candidate at Portland State University where she was the 2006-07 recipient of the Laurels Graduate Tuition Scholarship. She has exhibited her work at the 2001 Burning Man in Nevada; Olympia Washington; Toronto, Ontario; and in a variety of venues in Portland.
The final installation featuring a student currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate program in an Oregon school will be Ely Kahn (Lewis and Clark College), June 4-29.
Through vision, leadership and service the Regional Arts
& Culture Council works to integrate arts and culture in all aspects of
community life.
