Pawn to Queen Four II at the Portland Building
February 19-March 16, 2007

The Regional Arts & Culture Council presents the installation, Pawn to Queen Four II: Featuring the Scrubby Action Figures, by Portland artist Susan Gladstone in the Portland Building Installation Space, February 19-March 16, 2007. The Portland Building, located at 1120 SW 5th Avenue, is open to the public from 7am - 6pm, Monday through Friday.

A dozen abstract “action figures”, powered by small motors will spin, scuff, dart, wobble, conference, and bump against the proverbial wall while “in residence” at the Portland Building Installation Space. The installation references the often absurd and frenetic energy of our lives – at work, in relationships, and during our free time. The artist’s goal is to both elicit laughter and stimulate discussion about getting caught up in the hectic pace of life.

Background
Susan Gladstone was a member of Gallery 114 from 1997 to 2003 and served as a youth mentor at P:ear (Programs: Education, Art, Recreation) in 2003-04. Her work has also been included in group exhibitions at the Basil Hayward Gallery in Powell’s Books, the Littman Gallery at Portland State University, and the San Francisco Art Institute where Gladstone did post-baccalaureate work in 2005.

Sponsored by the Regional Arts & Culture Council since 1994, the Installation Art Series at the Portland Building invites the general public to re-examine its expectations and definitions of art, encourage dialogue about the role of art in public spaces, and provide artists with alternative exhibition space for their work. Upcoming installations will feature three students currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate programs in Oregon schools: March 26-April 30, Rachel Warkentin (Oregon State University); April 30-May 25, Kamaya Lindquist (Portland State University); and June 4-29, Ely Kahn (Lewis and Clark College).

Through vision, leadership and service the Regional Arts & Culture Council works to integrate arts and culture in all aspects of community life.
