Regional Arts & Culture Council Awards
$407,462 for 91 Arts Projects in 2008
The Regional Arts & Culture Council has awarded $407,462 to 47 organizations and 44 individual artists who will be offering artistic programs for the general public throughout the tri-county area in 2008. Funds for these projects come from the City of Portland, Multnomah County, Clackamas County, Washington County, Metro, and Work for Art, RACC's workplace giving program.
“I am especially excited that we were able to support so many new artists this year,” said Eloise Damrosch, Executive Director of RACC. “For 16 of these organizations and 30 of these individual artists, it’s their very first RACC project grant.”
The artistic projects that were awarded provide an exciting glimpse into the artistic and cultural offerings for next year. Hand2Mouth Theatre will perform a play in a Portland parking lot; the Hillsboro Symphony Orchestra will present a Spring concert themed “Pirates!”; and a special photography exhibition on Portland’s Bike Culture will be mounted by Rachel Siegel. Also in 2008, artists Sarah Ferguson and Bruce Orr will work on art projects with students at Sunnyside Elementary; the Hoffman Gallery at Lewis & Clark College will present a show on sustainable art; and Briar Levit will describe routes conducive to the needs of dogs, elderly folks, and babies in his new book, Unseen: Portland Companion Walks.
RACC’s 2008 Project Grants will fund new artwork from Horatio Hung-Yan Law, Rose Bond, David Eckard, Angelle Hebert, Hilary Pfeifer, Diane Jacobs, and many others. Several of the community’s favorite festivals will be retuning next year with funding from RACC, including the India Festival, the Estacada Summer Celebration and the Portland Documentary & eXperimental Film Festival. For more details on these and 76 other events scheduled to occur in 2008 in schools, libraries, theaters, concert halls and galleries throughout the region, visit www.racc.org/grants/docs/2008RACCProjectGrants.pdf.
RACC awards Project Grants in three categories: Artistic Focus (RACC received 141 applications in a variety of disciplines); Neighborhood Arts Projects (RACC received 26 applications); and Arts-in-Schools (RACC received 23 applications), for a total of 190 applications. These proposals were evaluated by 42 community volunteers – professional artists, teachers, community representatives and arts administrators – serving on 10 panels. The panelists read the applications and rated each proposed projects for artistic merit, audience access, and fiscal responsibility.
Given the amount of funding that was available this year, 91 grantees (48% of those who applied) were recommended for funding to the RACC Board of Directors. The final grants were approved by the RACC Board on December 5, 2007.
