The Regional Arts & Culture Council to Offer
Artists Workshops in 2008

From January to June 2008, the Regional Arts & Culture Council (RACC) will be offering professional development workshops for working artists in all disciplines who reside in the tri-county Portland region. These workshops are offered as part of RACC’s commitment to provide relevant and inexpensive learning opportunities that help artists become more successful in their careers.

Eleven professional development workshops will be presented, including sessions on public art, marketing, legal issues, grant writing and new media formatting. There will be a special all-day workshop touring Seattle’s Fabrication Specialties and the Olympic Sculpture Park. RACC staff, along with qualified specialists in their fields, will be leading these presentations. The following is a schedule of workshops that will be offered. Friday, January 18, 2008 from 9:00 a.m. to Noon
Legal Issues for the Creative Entrepreneur (multi-discipline& graphic arts)
Participants will review copyright and licensing issues, common artist contracts and business documents – including consignment agreements, branding and trademarks, copyright protection, infringement litigation and fair use. Presenter: Kohel Haver. Location: Multnomah Art Center, 7688 SW Capitol Hwy. Fee: $25.

Friday, January 25, 2008 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Will Click for Art: Online Marketing Workshop for Artists and Organizations
Online marketing: what works, what doesn’t. Discover free online resources that will bring more visitors to your web site. Good principals of user interface, information architecture and navigation structure. Presenter: Mark Grimes. Location: Art Institute of Portland, 1122 NW Davis Street. Fee: $25.

The Balancing Act: Making Art & Making Money
Go beyond marketing to get connected and create a following for your work. Learn essential tips and tools to increase your visibility and profitability. Presenters: Carolyn Campbell and Bob Sterry. Location: New Columbia Community Education Center, 4625 N. Trenton. Fee: $25.

Friday, February 29, 2008 from 9:00 a.m. to Noon
Artists Wanted: Public Art from A to Z
Learn tips on putting together successful public art applications, learning how selection panels review work and select artists, sorting through the mysteries of public art budgets, determining realistic timelines for design, fabrication and installation, and more. Presenters: RACC Public Art Managers. Location: New Columbia Community Education Center, 4625 N. Trenton. Fee: $25.

Friday, March 7, 2008 from 9:00 a.m. to Noon

Saturday, March 15, 2008 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Innovative Materials for Mural Painting with Larry Kangas
Artist Larry Kangas will present examples of his mural work and discuss the basics of gridding, enlarging and transferring a design, preparing the fabric and permanently adhering it to surfaces both indoor and outdoor. Presenter: Larry Kangas. Location: Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA), Room 203, 1241 NW Johnson Street. Fee: $25.

Going Digital: Submitting Application Materials in New Media Formats (Mac Session)
Learn how to format digital images to meet general standards for projection and to meet RACC’s specific requirements for submitting digital media. Learn more about photo-editing software, as well as how to format, label and organize your image files and burn them to a CD. Presenter: Julia Stoops. Location: Art Institute of Portland, 1122 NW Davis Street. Fee: $25.

Friday, April 18, 2008 from 9:00 a.m. to Noon
Grant Writing for Success—101
In this introductory workshop geared for the first-time applicant, participants learn brainstorming methods for generating the first draft and how to decode application questions. Artists can learn how to write grant applications with passion and clarity. Presenter: Gigi Rosenberg. Location: New Columbia Community Education Center, 4625 N. Trenton. Fee: $25

Thursday April 24, 2008 from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Field Trip to Seattle: A visit to Fabrication Specialties and Olympic Sculpture Park!
Tour Fabrication Specialties’ and learn about materials and processes used in designing, fabricating and installing public art. Then on to the Seattle Art Museum’s new Olympic Sculpture Park that features over twenty works. Presenters: Larry Tate and RACC Public Art staff. Location: Meet at RACC offices, 108 NW 9th, Suite 300, at 8am. Fee: $60.

Friday, May 16, 2008 from 9:00 a.m. to Noon
Grant Writing for Success—102
This advanced workshop is for individual artists who have some experience grant writing and want to improve their chances of success in winning grants. Learn strategies for finding fresh and compelling language to describe an artistic project. Presenter: Gigi Rosenberg. Location: Museum of Contemporary Craft, 724 NW Davis. Fee: $25.

Friday, June 20, 2008 from 9:00 a.m. to Noon
