The Vision Vessel
at the Portland Building July 5-7, 2006
The Regional Arts & Culture Council will host The Vision Vessel in the Portland Building Installation Space, July 5-7, 2006 (Wednesday through Friday). The Vision Vessel is a roving multi-media recording booth designed by Public Media Works to gather text input about the city's future from individuals aged 17 to 35.
In conjunction with Film Action Oregon, Public Media Works, a Portland non-commercial organization, is spearheading the project with support from a visionPDX grant, a city-sponsored effort to involve community members in creating a plan for Portland over the next 30 years. Other Vision Vessel sponsors include Oregon Blueprint, Flexcar, and Stumptown Coffee. Vision Vessel has been making appearances at various outlets around Portland since May.
Portlanders can participate in the Vision Vessel project via the website, www.visionvessel.org which also houses a living record of the Vessel's text, photographs, and audio responses, searchable by neighborhood, age, and, if provided, the participant’s name. Website visitors can also listen or subscribe to weekly podcasts that highlight the "best of" the audio responses.
Background
Public Media Works is a non-commercial organization currently filing for 501c3 nonprofit status. Its mission is to inspire civic engagement through the production and distribution of public interest videos and new media. Its documentary stories, interactive art projects and participatory events provide under-represented voices the opportunity to speak and be heard, while empowering audiences to make a difference in their communities.
Its projects include video and film work for Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Oregon League of Conservation Voters, the environmental group Illahee, and the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. It has also produced several videos for The Bus Project, with whom it shares offices at 333 SE 2nd Avenue in Portland.
