A Portland Cloud at the Portland Building
January 15-February 9, 2007
The Regional Arts & Culture Council presents the installation, A Portland Cloud, by Portland landscape architect Carolina Aragon in the Portland Building Installation Space, January 15-February 9, 2007. The Portland Building, located at 1120 SW 5th Avenue, is open to the public from 7am - 6pm, Monday through Friday.
Aragon, inspired by cloud formation physics, has created a three-dimensional weaving of monofilament that is basically a weightless assembly of reflective particles that will be suspended in the space, accessible to viewers from multiple angles. The installation also speaks to Portland’s atmospheric conditions while at the same time playfully engaging the public. The artist has written, “Clouds and our observation of them has always been a subject of play. It is a place in time where our perceptions of the natural environment and our imaginations merge into a dance that defies capturing and is never static.”
Background
Born in Cali, Colombia, Carolina Aragon earned her Masters in Landscape Architecture from Harvard University. Her past exhibitions have included Inhabiting Paper at Sheldon Galleries in St. Louis, Missouri (2003) where she created a self-supporting wall out of toilet paper, the goal being to create a structure using weaving techniques and fragile materials to create a freestanding structure. In 2000, her temporary outdoor installation Showering Trees was featured near the Savannah, Georgia Visitor’s Center entry and invited the public to consider the “artful artificiality of urban vegetation.” She currently works at the landscape architecture firm of Walker/Macy in Portland.
Sponsored by the Regional Arts & Culture Council since 1994, the Installation Art Series at the Portland Building invites the general public to re-examine its expectations and definitions of art, encourage dialogue about the role of art in public spaces, and provide artists with alternative exhibition space for their work. Next artist featured will be Susan Gladstone, February 19-March 16, 2007.
Through vision, leadership and service the Regional Arts
& Culture Council works to integrate arts and culture in all aspects of
community life.
