RACC Presents "Eventually . . . "
a temporary installation in the Portland Building
March 27 - April 21 , 2006
The Regional Arts & Culture Council presents the installation Eventually . . . by Portland artists Ethan Ham and Evan Wilcox in the Portland Building Installation Space, March 27-April 21, 2006. The Portland Building is located at 1120 SW 5th Avenue and is open to the public from 7am - 6pm, Monday through Friday. An opening reception for the artists is scheduled for Wednesday, April 5, from 5-7 p.m. at the Portland Building.
The installation is a moving landscape of everyday images, and is constructed from conveyor belts of translucent photographs and colored silhouettes. A screen separates the viewer from the images, which are backlit by a variety of lights, slides, and film. When a viewer approaches the installation, it is dark except for several large, illuminated buttons. These inviting buttons cause various elements of the installation to be activated or set into motion. The animating apparatus of the installation is viewable from the stairwell on the east side of the alcove.
“Eventually... is an exploration of the relationship between our physical and mental habitats," wrote the artists. "Both are subject to erosion; over time some details become sharper, while others lose focus or fade away entirely.”
Ethan Ham received his Masters of Fine Arts from Portland State University and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film & Video Production from the University of California in Santa Cruz. In 2005, he received an Honorable Mention for Outstanding Student Achievement from the International Sculpture Center and was awarded a commission from the Rhizome Commission Program (www.rhizome.org) which supports artists in the creation of original works of net art. In 2004, he received a grant for public art project from the Gunk Foundation. He currently teaches at the Art Institute of Portland. Evan Wilcox received his Masters of Fine Arts in Painting from Portland State University and his Bachelors of Art in Studio Art from Grinnell College in Iowa. He is a freelance graphic designer and art director for such clients as Nike, Ziba Design, McGraw-Hill/Contemporary and Bridgewater Design in Chicago.
Sponsored by the Regional Arts & Culture Council since 1994, the Installation Art Series at the Portland Building invites the general public to re-examine its expectations and definitions of art, encourage dialogue about the role of art in public spaces, and provide artists with alternative exhibition space for their work. Future artists to be featured include Mike Barber, Linda Austen, Carla Mann, Margretta Hanson, and Cydney Wilkes, May 1-26; and Tim Young, June 5-30.
Through vision, leadership and service the Regional Arts
& Culture Council works to integrate arts and culture in all aspects of
community life.
