The Bigger Picture at the Portland Building
September 25-October 20, 2006

The Regional Arts & Culture Council presents the installation, The Bigger Picture, by Portland artist Adam Kuby in the Portland Building Installation Space, September 25-October 20, 2006. The Portland Building, located at 1120 SW 5th Avenue, is open to the public from 7am - 6pm, Monday through Friday.

The Bigger Picture captures the effect of seeing the earth as a solitary point of life within the vast emptiness of the universe. Kuby will transform the installation space into a lightless black box in the middle of which the viewer will see Planet Earth. Signage similar to what directs visitors to various locations in the Portland Building lobby will, in turn, direct visitors to points of interest beyond Planet Earth, such as “Emptiness of Space,” “Outer Edge of the Atmosphere,” “Eco-roof,” “Molten Core of Planet,” and “Indian Ocean.”

Kuby writes, “Most of us go through our day focusing on the tasks at hand – getting from here to there, making plans, crossing Ts and dotting Is – and lose sight of the bigger picture – that we exist on one tiny fragile spot in the midst of a vast and unfathomable universe.”

Background
With a background in sculpture, landscape design and environmental studies, Adam Kuby has created temporary art installations for the Kansas City Art Institute, Connemara Conservancy in Dallas, Texas, and Urban Paradise: Gardens in the City, sponsored by the Public Art Fund in New York City. He is currently working on a skateable entry for the new Pier Park Skatepark and a public art component for a pedestrian overpass in the City of Calgary.

Sponsored by the Regional Arts & Culture Council since 1994, the Installation Art Series at the Portland Building invites the general public to re-examine its expectations and definitions of art, encourage dialogue about the role of art in public spaces, and provide artists with alternative exhibition space for their work. Artists featured through 2006 include Rhoda London, October 30-November 24; all the art that fits: City/County employee art exhibit, December 1-January 5, 2007; Carolina Aragon, January 15-February 9, 2007; Susan Gladstone, February 19-March 16, 2007.

Through vision, leadership and service the Regional Arts & Culture Council works to integrate arts and culture in all aspects of community life.
