The Regional Arts & Culture Council (RACC) is pleased to announce the winner of this year’s Individual Artist’s Fellowship Award in Visual Arts: Henk Pander. This fellowship, which is presented to a local artist of high merit in rotating disciplines each year, carries a cash award of $20,000.
Henk Pander is a brilliant painter who has played a critical role in Portland’s artistic community over a span of forty years. His work reflects a deep historical awareness with strong connections to the local, regional and international community. Henk’s classical European training and his life experience are elegantly reflected in a body of work that is like no other in this region. An uncompromising idealist, he works in a great painterly tradition rather than suiting the trends and fads of art dealers. He is making art that will be as important tomorrow as it is today. Henk has also served as mentor and teacher to countless artists in the region, was a founding member of Storefront Theatre in the 70s, and has collaborated on numerous dance productions over the years. Henk was the driving force behind the creation of the Visual Chronicle of Portland, a city-owned archival collection of works on paper that portrays artists’ ideas, visions, and perceptions of what makes this city unique. RACC oversees this collection.

With the RACC Artist Fellowship award, Henk will spend a year traveling in his trailer throughout the vast American West, creating a “visual chronicle” of the American experience. The Fellowship will give him the opportunity to work freely and productively throughout this period. Exhibits and lectures featuring these new works will follow.
The RACC Artists Fellowship Award was established in 1999 as a way for the community to recognize the value of some of the region’s most accomplished artists. The program is intended to help artists of high merit sustain or enhance their creative process. To apply, professional artists must have worked in their field for 10 years and have lived in the Portland tri-county area for five. The Fellowship Grant program operates in a four-year cycle in terms of the disciplines it celebrates. Next year Media Arts (FY07-08) will be honored. For more information visit www.racc.org/grants.
Applications, which include three narrative questions, two letters of recommendation, and examples of the artist’s work, are reviewed through a lengthy panel process of community representatives from the discipline being honored. Serving as Visual Arts Panelists this year were Paul Dahlquist, Robert Dozono, Jennifer Gately, Linda Hutchins, Thomas Orr, Jim McDonald, Julia Stoops and Marie Watt.
