Prolonged Inconclusive Thinking About Collision
a temporary installation
November 14 – December 9, 2005
The Regional Arts & Culture Council presents the installation, Prolonged Inconclusive Thinking About Collision, by Portland artist Jenine Alexander, in the Portland Building Installation Space, November 14-December 9, 2005. The Portland Building, located at 1120 SW 5 th Avenue, is open to the public from 7am - 6pm, Monday through Friday.
Over the course of four years as an undergraduate at Lewis & Clark College majoring in International Affairs and Studio Art, Jenine Alexander spent time thinking about the political gridlock found in countless conflicts worldwide and how she might communicate the common feelings of frustration and persistence. She came to one simple collision solution: the image of her running into a wall. She videotaped herself running into walls and created drawings from that footage to create a series of animated loops. From that footage she compiled the most salient loops to create a four-minute piece.
Background
Jenine Alexander gained experience in editing video while an intern to the Art Director of IMNY, a documentary television program at the Downtown Community Television Center in New York. Her deep interest in international politics informs her work. While at Lewis & Clark College, she organized speakers who stimulated conservation about international issues. In the months before the 2004 election, Alexander trained canvassers for the Young Voter Project. Before that she was a Foreign Correspondent based at Radio Universidad de Guadalajara in Mexico, sending stories to KBOO 90.7 FM in Portland. These kinds of dialogues are what inform her artwork. While developing this video, Alexander worked on her thesis in International Affairs where she researched the regional implications of the public peace process of sustained dialogue that was used in Tajikistan beginning in 1993. Alexander has just completed a cross-country bicycle trip and is planning on doing future research in Cyprus.
Sponsored by the Regional Arts & Culture Council since 1994, the Installation Art Series at the Portland Building invites the general public to re-examine its expectations and definitions of art, encourage dialogue about the role of art in public spaces, and provide artists with alternative exhibition space for their work. Artists featured through June 2006 will be: Marlene Alt, January 17-February 10, 2006; Geri Ondrizek,February 20-March 17; Ethan Hamm & Annie Brissenden, March 27-April 21; Mike Barber, Linda Austen, Carla Mann, Margretta Hanson, Cydney Wilkes, May 1-26; and Tim Young, June 5-30.
