Seventy-six artists and arts organizations in the Portland metropolitan area have received funding from the Regional Arts & Culture Council (RACC) for projects to occur in 2006.
RACC Project Grants will support new works by Polaris Dance Theatre, Willamette Radio Workshop, Pacific Crest Sinfonietta, visual artist Junko Iijima, theatre artist Susan Banyas, composer Jackie Gabel, filmmaker Ilana Sol, novelist Laura Foster, and African dance artist Loveness Wesa. In addition, Community Music Center, Estacada Arts Commission, Rose City Park Elementary, and several others received grants to support artistic programs and residencies in schools and community venues in the region. Popular events such as the Northwest Professional Dance Project and Portland Piano International were also funded.
RACC Project Grants support the art and culture in three categories: Artistic Focus, Neighborhood Arts and Arts-in-Schools. Nine panels composed of 41 community participants (37 of whom have never served on a RACC review panel before) met throughout the month of October and adjudicated all of the proposals that were received. Each grant request was rated based on artistic merit, audience reach, and fiscal responsibility of the applicant. This final list of grantees was recommended to the RACC Board of Directors, which officially approved the grants on December 7, 2005.
These 76 Project Grants were awarded to 32 individuals (17 of whom have never before received RACC funding) and 44 organizations (19 of which have never been funded by RACC). One organization and one individual each received two grants, for distinctly different projects. Together, these grants represent a wide range of creative endeavors which enrich the cultural landscape of the Portland metropolitan area. Funding comes from the City of Portland, Multnomah County, Clackamas County, Washington County, and Metro; RACC is the steward of these public investments in arts and culture for the tri-county region.
