Banquet
a temporary installation
at the Portland Building
April 4-29, 2005

The Regional Arts & Culture Council presents the installation, Banquet, by Portland artist, Rachel Denny, in the Portland Building lobby installation Space, April 4-29, 2005. The Portland Building, located at 1120 SW 5th Avenue, is open to the public from 7am - 6pm, Monday through Friday.

Banquet continues Denny’s exploration of the meaning(s) that can be associated with everyday, mundane objects. The space will contain a glittering mass of discarded silverware the artist has collected from garage sales and thrift stores over the last year. Soothing ocean sounds will accompany the installation serving as a reminder of places far-removed from the fluorescent lit Portland Building. Denny suggests that the waves of utensils may be a metaphor of hope that gently urges individuals to drink in life and to take in each moment fully; or, from another perspective, may reflect on our excessive consumerism and the amount of trash that litters the environment.

Rachel Denny is represented by the Mark Woolley Gallery where she has had solo exhibitions in 2000, 2002, and 2004 and participated in numerous group exhibitions. Her work was also included in the 2003 Craft Biennial at the Oregon College of Art and Craft and the 2004 Affair at the Jupiter Hotel. She has donated work to the Cascade AIDS Project Annual Benefit since 1999.

Background
Sponsored by the Regional Arts & Culture Council since 1994, the Installation Art Series at the Portland Building invites the general public to re-examine its expectations and definitions of art, encourage dialogue about the role of art in public spaces, and provide artists with alternative exhibition space for their work. The next deadline for applications from September 2005 through June 2006 is Monday, April 11, 2005. A Call for Artists is available on RACC’s website. For more information, contact RACC at 503.823.5111.

Through vision, leadership and service the Regional Arts & Culture Council works to integrate arts and culture in all aspects of community life.
