With RACC's commitment to support arts education in area schools, we offer the educational resources below for educators, artists, parents and students to explore arts education opportunities in the tri-county region and to become familiar with arts curriculum in area schools.

Special Opportunities for Educators :

  • Picturing America availabe to Schools & Libraries. The National Endowment for the Humanities’ (NEH) new Picturing America initiative provides an innovative way for citizens of all ages to explore the history and character of America through some of our nation’s greatest works of art. Picturing America is a free resource that can be readily used in every classroom and public library in the country. Images of people, places, and events illustrating American history give citizens everywhere a chance to better understand our country’s past and its ideals. Picturing America is available to all eligible public, private, parochial, and charter and home school consortia (K-12), as well as public libraries in the United States and its territories. These organizations will receive: A set of 40 high-quality reproductions (approximately 24” x 36”) of great American art; A teachers resource book.   • 4/30-5/2 Community Schools for All: 10th Anniversary National Forum. The Coalition for Community Schools believes that strong communities require strong schools and strong schools require strong communities. We envision a future in which schools are centers of thriving communities where everyone belongs, works together, and succeeds. Keynotes speakers: Pedro Noguera, Vicki Phillips, Ura Harkavy, and Susan Castillo. Symposium: A New Day for Learning. Over 80 workshops focusing on various aspects of Community Schools.   • MetLife Foundation Partners in Arts Education Program sponsored by the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts and MetLife Foundation. The goal of the program is to enhance arts learning in K-12 Public Schools by supporting exemplary Community School of the Arts/Public School partnerships that: Serve large numbers of public school students during the school day; Exemplify best practices in creating and sustaining effective partnerships; Provide pedagogically-sound arts education experiences; Prioritize student learning and achievement; and Address national, state, and/or local arts education standards. In 2008, the project will award grants of up to $20,000 to support exemplary arts education partnerships during the 2008-2009 school year and present an arts education partnership training institute in conjunction with the 2008 Conference for Community Arts Education in Philadelphia, PA, on 10/29.   • Sponsorships for Local Arts and Education Programs: Barnes and Noble Sponsorships and Charitable Donations Program. Barnes & Noble, a national bookstore chain, provides in-store fundraising opportunities, sponsorships, and donations to local and regional nonprofit organizations that focus on literacy, the arts, or K-12 education. Applicants must be located in the communities with company stores and should serve the greater good of the local community or region. A plan for promoting the program with Barnes & Noble should be included in the proposal. Barnes & Noble also provides limited support to national nonprofit organizations that focus on the company’s grantmaking priorities. Portland Area Schools Arts Curriculum Frameworks & Benchmarks

RACC serves 35 school districts in the region, and has documented 15 districts' arts curricula. The compilations below include curriculum frameworks for K-12 for the following disciplines: Art, Dance, Drama, Multimedia and Music. This survey was paid for by the Oregon Arts Commission Education Leadership Project Grant.

Oregon Artistic Heritage Films for Grades 4-12

The four films in the Preservation of Oregon's Artistic Heritage series are now available at the Salem Art Association. These documentaries of four outstanding Oregon artists who have created art in Oregon for a generation: Leroy Setziol, a wood sculptor from Sheridan; Jack McLarty, a painter/printmaker from Portland; Ashland painter Betty LaDuke; and Rick Bartow, multi-media artist from South Beach. Each 40-60 minute film explores how living in the Northwest has affected these individuals and how they have affected the culture of the region. On the website are lesson plans for grades 4-12 and other resources to complement using the films in the classrooms. The curriculum explores the artistic processes presented by the artists and connects to topics in science, math, social studies, and language arts. Visit www.poahonline.org.

Artists for the Arts

Portland-based non-profit organization, Artists for the Arts, founded by singer Valerie Day, made up of musicians, dancers and painters who create for a living - as well as parents, educators, businesspeople and friends of the arts dedicated to raising awareness and funding for arts education in tri-county schools.

SUN Schools

Schools Uniting Neighborhoods (SUN) Initiative is a collaboration of City, County, State and Schools in Portland ⁄ Multnomah County, Oregon. SUN's Mission is to improve the lives of children, their families and the community through partnering with local school communities in Multnomah County to extend the school day and develop schools as "community centers" in their neighborhoods. Architecture Foundation of Oregon's Architects in Schools

Thousands of tri-county students have participated in Architects in Schools over the years. It is just as vital and relevant today as it was when Marjorie Wintermute and Jody Proppe first initiated the program nearly 25 years ago. Architects in Schools pairs practicing architects with classroom teachers to create and implement customized curricula for third through sixth grade students over a six-week residency. This program, previously administered by RACC, is now sponsored by Architecture Foundation of Oregon. Vist http://www.af-oregon.org/afo.php?section=education&category=schools.

Arts Explore

University of Oregon Saturday morning Workshops. This new arts education program is aimed at adults who teach school-aged young people - could include in-service teachers, recreation program leaders, administrators, etc. For more details see http://center.uoregon.edu/arts_explore/.

Cultural Arts Resource Directory (CARD)

 

The Oregon Folklife Program (OFP) and the Oregon Alliance for Arts Education (OAAE) have partnered in developing the Cultural Arts Resource Directory. CARD provides annotated listings of cultural arts resources primarily in the state of Oregon and is a reference for Oregon educators and those interested in cultural arts education. Turtle Island Storytellers Network

Turtle Island Storytellers Network is the American Indian speaker’s bureau has been developed to promote talented American Indian storytellers, tribal historians, and song carriers from the Pacific Northwest and Northern Plains. Visit http://www.turtleislandstorytellers.net.

Connect to Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)

Classrooms can remotely connect with LACMA via two alternate technologies. Multi-point classroom connections are possible. A facilitator/teacher from your school must be present during the test connection and the program.
