RACC is pleased to once again provide a listing of summer art camps in the tri-county region. Camps that offer a variety of artistic disciplines are listed below. 6/16-27 Kids Dance Camp at BodyVox. This year our three different groups—Blue (ages 3-5), Red (ages 6-8), and Green (ages 9-12)—will each have a unique variety of BodyVox styled workshops selected especially for their age. Will introduce kids to creative dance, stackrobats, which combines gymnastics and tumbling with dance movement, dance composition and choreography; contemporary jazz; ballet; yoga and pilates; improvisation; music and rhythm; and folk dance. 7/7-8/2 Young Dancer Summer at The Portland Ballet. Weekly (or twice weekly) classes will be offered for Pre-Ballet through Level Two students. This is a wonderful opportunity for younger dancers to stay active during the summer and it provides an extra boost for students hoping to move up to the next level for the curriculum year. 7/7-8/8 Pendulum Summer Camps. 7/7-17 Beginning and Intermediate Aerial Dance Camp: A camp ideal for beginning to intermediate-level recreational students ages 9-18. Campers will build and expand on a foundation of skills and create short presentation pieces with various disciplines in the air and on the ground. Coordination, flexibility, grace and strength are all developed which providing good fun for everyone in a supportive and safe environment. Attend for one or both weeks! A short presentation will be given each Thursday afternoon for friends and family. 9:00AM-3:00PM, Monday through Thursday. Tuition $350/week. 8/4-14 Advanced Summer Intensive: This camp is geared towards older campers with an established background in gymnastics, dance (traditional or aerial), and/or other circus skills. Campers will concentrate on developing higher-level skills and artistic presentation work in several aerial and ground disciplines, including handstands, adagio, aerial hoop, trapeze and silks, acrobatics, and more! Second-week students will have the opportunity for further artistic exploration with feedback from staff. A short presentation will be given at the end of each week for friends and family. 9:00AM-4:00PM daily (M-F Week 1, M-Th Week 2). Tuition: $525/week. 6/16-7/25 The Cinema Arts Camp at Digital Elf Studios. This camp will take yo deeply into the art of making a movie. Half of the day will be spent working with professional filming equipment. The other half of the day will be spent in post production and 3D computer animation. Each student will be provided with their own state of the art workstation. 6/16-8/27 Summer Film Camps for Kids + Teens at the NW Film Center. The film arts are an excellent way to learn about group decision making, build self-confidence, and uncover and nurture your talent. Participate in these week-long adventures in animation, digital video, documentary, and dramatic filmmaking. All equipment provided. No experience necessary. 6/23-7/25 School of Music Summer Boot Camp. Summer Boot Camps are ideal programs for musicians ages 7-18 who want an immersive summer day camp experience. Students spend one to two full weeks working in a hands-on atmosphere honing their performance and ensemble expertise as well as learning valuable music industry-related skills. Not only will they meet and interact with other talented young musicians, they're also given unique access to established music professionals who will share their experience and knowledge to help students understand some of the options open to them in the music industry. 6/23-8/9 Rock & Roll Camp for Girls. An intensive one week day camp (3 sessions offered) for girls ages 8-18, campers of all skill levels learn guitar, drums, keyboards, bass, vocals, or DJing, form a band, write a song, and perform at the end of week sold out Showcase for friends, family, and hundreds of screaming fans. 6/23-8/22 Ethos Summer Music Camp. Ethos Music Camp is open to all students ages 6-12. Students will be assigned to smaller groups according to age, ability, and instrument of choice. The camp is open to students of all abilities. Different instruments are featured each session. Each student chooses a primary instrument to focus on during the week. Students study technique, rhythm and music theory while learning performance pieces and preparing for the final recital. Additional activities include choir class, guest performers and art activities, as well as outdoor sports and games including basketball, soccer, kickball, hoola hoop and numerous other fun athletic activities. Numbers are limited, so early registration is encouraged. The five sessions include: Rock Band or Hip Hop Ensembles; Rock Band or Hip Hop Ensembles; Guitar or Piano; Percussion or Piano; Strings or Piano. 6/22-7/4; 7/6-18 Young Musicians & Artists Camp (YMA) . Starting in 1965, YMA has offered students classes in instrumental music, and more recently in theatre, musical theatre, choir, piano, dance, photography, the visual arts, and creative writing. YMA students increase their artistic skills while building self-esteem and an appreciation for all the performing and visual arts. YMA is a two-week resident visual and performing arts summer program housed at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon. Students range from grades four through twelve. 6/23-8/1 Homowo African Arts & Cultures Summer Camps which provide rich cultural experiences for one week at a time. The summer Arts Camps are designed to introduce youngsters to a variety of performing arts activities while learning about the richness of Africa and cultural arts. Classes are taught by Homowo performers who share their knowledge of Ghanaian drumming and dance through lively activities. Students will learn to play some basic drum rhythms, dance, hear African Stories and generally be immersed in African culture for one week. 6/23-8/15 Happy Chinese Campers: Chinese Immersion Summer Camp for Children (Mixed levels; 4 sessions). Children will learn Chinese language arts and songs, dancing, stories, arts and crafts, fun and games and outdoor activities -- all in Mandarin Chinese. As well virtue studies and meditation will be taught. Group A: Ages 6-12; Group B: Ages 3-5. Children new to Chinese will learn fundamentals of listening and speaking and correct pronunciation; Children who already know some Chinese will continue to build on what they know. 6/23-8/15 Irvington Extended (IED) Day Program. Summer at IED is relaxed and fun, with plenty of time for outside play. They’ll have weekly themes to explore through the arts throughout the summer, and brush up on soccer skills the last two weeks of August. In addition, children will have time to help in the garden, cook, and play games all summer long. Activities are designed for k (must be 5 years old by June 1st 2008) through 5th grade. 6/30-8/8 Willowbrook: Outdoor Children's Art Program. In an atmosphere of laughter and love, work and play, children find expression for their creative powers. There are places for quiet reflection, for music and writing, places for play-acting and for dancing, and places where the imagination can create beauty from a ball of clay, a tube of paint, or a found object. 7/7-8/22 Grace Art Camps: Tales from Scandinavia. Stories hold the imaginations of the cultures of the world, and each year Grace Art Camp places story at the heart and inspiration of its curriculum. A week at Grace Art Camp provides an opportunity to be immersed in story, culture, and art. Children from ages 4 to 12 may select one week-long session in which to creatively explore new skills and ideas through music, dance, drama, visual arts, book arts, ceramics, glass, and fibre arts. The camp’s supportive, process-oriented environment nurtures creativity and builds community. Students experience the collaboration and friendship between fellow campers, their counselors, and the professional art staff. Throughout the week everyone is encouraged to put into practice the Art Camp values of being respectful, responsible, resourceful, and receptive. 7/14-18, 21-25 MetroArts Kids Camp gives 7-12 year-olds a chance to experience all the arts – music, dance, theater, and visual arts – for one or two weeks at the Portland Center for Performing Arts (SW Broadway at Main). Kids crank up their creativity through hands-on activities involving each art form and also enjoy live performances, video demonstrations, and classes taught by professional musicians, dancers, actors, and visual artists. The week activities culminate with the Friday Project. The camp is directed by grammy-nominated Artistic Director Niel DePonte, Oregon Symphony principal percussionist, Oregon Ballet Theater Conductor, and arts educator. Enroll early at a lower rate. 7/14 – 8/1 IMAGINE! Arts Camp with the Glenn & Viola Walters Cultural Arts Center in Hillsboro. Kids will let their imaginations fly this summer at the Glenn and Viola Walters Cultural Arts Center Arts Camp. Each week of camp, kids will experience different kinds of art in two, hour-long classes. Campers will work closely with their fellow campers and professional artists while working on fun projects. They will create their own works of art and have loads of fun participating in camp songs, skits, games and other fun activities. Campers will get a healthy snack everyday. 8/10-24 Summer Teen Program Call for Applications Focus on Native American Art and Culture. The A. Susana Santos' Journeys in Creativity program introduces teens to the richness of Native American art and tradition through hands-on art workshops, museum field trips, and live performances. 16 teenagers will be chosen to embark on a journey through the remarkable world of Native American art and culture. This creative, cross-cultural exploration is provided by Oregon College of Art and Craft (OCAC) and takes place on its wooded campus in Portland, Oregon. The program is free to the selected participants, including housing, food, materials, and instruction. The Journeys 2008 camp focus is the Art of the Canoe. 7/7-18 Tears of Joy Theatre Puppet Camps-Summer 2008. 7/7-11 Puppet Construction & Performance: Spend a week with us creating a fabulous puppet, exploring character development and puppetry moves and grooves. 7/7-8/15 Summer 2008 Classes at the Lakewood Center for the Arts. Three Sessions: K-2 Kids Creative Dramatics: From 3:00 - 5:00 PM each day with a final performance always on last day of week at 4:30 pm. Kids write and create their own show through play, art, and imagination. There will be a big show at the end of each session for parents to enjoy. Each session will have a theme to draw from. TV/Film Acting: Get a taste of stardom and have fun through on-camera acting. Practice improvisation, presentation and audition skills using commercial, film and TV Scripts - comedy and drama. 7/9-8/5 Summer on Stage at Portland Actors Conservatory. No audition is required for this program. Students age 8 to 18 receive hands-on training in all aspects of the craft of acting. Each session provides an in-depth exploration of the fun and fundamentals of acting, the use of the imagination, and the utilization of the professional rehearsal process, culminating in a professionally-staged production in our own theatre. 7/14-18, 7/21-25 Nomadic Theatre Co’s Circus Arts Camp. Days will include clowning, juggling, unicycle, acrobatics, rolling globe, stilts, tumbling, theatrical games, dance and lots of imagination! Circus skills are challenging and fun, alternating between group skills and individual. We will work on both and develop acts over the week to present on Friday where friends and family will be invited. The atmosphere will be supportive and the focus on the learning and development of skills and characters during the week. The program is designed for those who have been learning circus skills and first timers. Some activities will be for the whole mixed aged group, and some more age specific. 7/14-25 CUENTOS Y TEATRO: Summer Theatre Camp in Spanish directed by Omar Vargas, Olga Sanchez and Mária Manness from Miracle Theatre. A unique and exciting theatre program for kids -- incorporating theatrical movement and games based on Latin American folklore, led by Ecuadorian theatre artist Omar Vargas and apprentice Mária Manness. The camp will include traditional mask-making directed by artistic director Olga Sanchez. Camp will be presented entirely in Spanish. Ages: 9–12 years old. 7/28 - 8/09 Summer Theatre Camp: Young Artists at Play at Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center (IFCC). Experience two weeks of games, exercises, writing, and performances built around your concerns, interests, ideas and dreams. Build confidence as both your intelligence and your creativity are given their chance to shine. Ages 10 to 13. One week camps are also available for children age 4 to 9. Play theatre games, build confidence and make new friends while receiving professional acting instruction. Summer Theatre Camp is brought to you by IFCC in partnership with Portland Theatre Brigade. 6/8-8/10 Portland Art Museum Summer Art Classes. The Museum offers a variety of hands-on studio art classes for children, teens, adults, and families in an environment that encourages creativity by using the collections and special exhibitions as a springboard for the imagination. 6/16-8/22 Art Adventures Summer Day Camp at Oregon College of Art and Craft. 9 week long sessions give children (ages 6-13 yrs) a chance to explore art in an energetic and fun camp setting. Located on OCAC's beautiful 9.5-acre forested campus, the camp encourages creative expression with an emphasis on the individual. Children develop skills and confidence in daily workshops that blend two- and three-dimensional media. Fun activities, games and songs are peppered throughout the day to help refill the children's creative tanks. The sense of respect and caring the staff displays help to make this camp successful and inspirational. Tuition is $300 per week, including snack and materials. 6/23-7/25 smARTworks for Children and Teens at Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA). smARTworks (Studio and Media ART Workshops) is a unique series of courses designed specifically for students ages 7 through 14. In this hands-on program, students learn to use art as a lens for investigating the world. Classes are structured to guide children as they explore project topics and to support their creativity as ideas find form. Students have the opportunity to utilize the many resources of the college including professional studios and labs, quality tools and materials, Charles Voorhies Fine Art Library and the Internet. 6/23-7/25 Summer Art Camps at Museum of Contemporary Craft. During each week-long session (2 sessions offered), campers explore the museum and work with incredible artists as their guides. Come learn craft traditions and techniques in wood, metal, glass and textiles and make a variety of objects. Campers will push the boundaries of tradition and go out into the city to collect, combine and transform non-traditional materials into lasting and personal pieces of art. 6/23-7/25 Camp SCRAP: Creative Reuse Summer Camp 2008. SCRAP will be offering three one-week Summer Camp sessions for kids ages 6-10. Campers will explore all the amazing things that can be made out of "scrap" materials, while also learning about the three R's: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! 6/23-8/22 Teen Workshop Program at Oregon College of Art and Craft. Whether taken for high school credit or to learn a new technique, these workshops allow students of all skill levels to explore their creativity in a fun and energetic setting. Led by a skilled and supportive staff, the participants develop solid foundation skills and a personal vision as they gain confidence in their own artwork. Located in the studios on OCAC's forested campus, the workshops focus on photography, jewelry, painting, fashion design, ceramics, and sculpture.While encouraging creative expression with an emphasis on the individual, the workshops also allow participants to connect on an artistic level with their peers. 6/24-8/28 100th Monkey Studio Art Camps. Camp runs 9am-3pm, Tuesday-Fridays and is $200 for the week. Also offer the option of 3-5pm aftercare for those who need longer days for and extra $20 per day. Participants should bring a healthy sack lunch and a water bottle.
