Here are just a few ideas on how to support the arts and shop locally:
- “Art In Hand: The Portland Project” is a unique deck of playing cards (pictured at right) showcasing the wide range of extraordinary local talent. Each standard sized playing card was created by a local Portland artist who created that card in his or her own distinct style. In the end, 54 different artists came together to create a mini art collection suitable for displaying or playing your favorite card games. Each deck costs $13, available at RACC, New Seasons, Powell’s Books, the Portland Art Museum store, online and several other locations around town.
- Green Gift Guide. The second edition of this special publication promotes shopping local and giving the gift of an experience, particularly in the arts. The Guide offers fabulous discounts on many of the best holiday performances around the region. Click here for more
- Crafty Wonderland & other Pop-Up stores . The City of Portland has filled vacant storefronts with temporary stores featuring the works of local artists and designers that will remain open through the holidays. Crafty Wonderland, in the Pearl at 802 NW 10th, is packed full of amazing handmade goods from over 80 hand-selected local artists.
- Holiday art bazaars: A fun way to find original gifts and also support your local art community is to attend Holiday Art Bazaars around the region. On RACC’s Announcement page there will be listings of bazaars and holiday sales on a daily basis up to Christmas. If you subscribe to the RSS feed on that page, it will show up on your Browser under “FEED” making it easy to check on what’s coming up.
- Willamette Week Give!Guide. Willamette Week’s annual holiday giving campaign supports 79 organizations in the Portland area. Donate to arts programs like Live Wire Radio, Wordstock, Business for Culture & the Arts, Disjecta, PDX Pop Now—and RACC’s The Right Brain Initiative—and receive incentives from local businesses. Donate through December 31, 2010.
- Oregon Cultural Trust: Take advantage of the Oregon Cultural Trust’s tax credit for 2010. Give to your favorite art or cultural group, then give a matching amount to the Trust and receive a tax credit for the entire Trust gift for 2010. Visit www.culturaltrust.org to donate. Mailed donations must be postmarked Dec 31, 2010 or earlier but you can make donations online up until 11:59pm on Dec 31.
